Singapore Maths and Science curricula

Singapore Maths and Science curriculaStarting this school year, we shall be adopting the Singapore Maths and Science curricula which has gained global admiration and acceptance after Singapore students topped the worldwide TIMSS exams for several consecutive years. US schools started using Singapore Maths to improve the quality of its instructions a few years ago. IN the Philippines, the Ateneo adopted the same 1-2 years ago.

We have ordered the books for Math and Science from Marshall Cavendish in Singapore. These are the same books Ateneo, Poveda, Xavier School, ICA, and some international schools are using. The books per level consist of 2 student's text books and 2-4 workbooks; they are smaller and lighter than the American textbooks of MacMillan, etc. that we've been using. Because we're importing them directly from SG, and they are the more current International Edition, the books are much pricier than previous, so expect higher costs of books starting this school year. Needless to say, the books follow International Standards rather than just the local DEPED standards but are compatible with the latter.

Also, we are hiring a Singaporean teacher on a half-time basis to teach Math to a few classes and at the same time train and help out our other Math teachers. His name is Mr. Banwah Ng. He came to the Phlippines in 2007 to teach at the Singapore School of Manila. Married to a Filipina, he now has permanent resident status. We hope to have Sir Banwah also help develop the Maths curriculum for high school.

Further, we have also hired a senior Science teacher/consultant who will both teach and train/supervise our science teachers and prepare the science curriculum for the high school. Her name is Miss Dheng. She has had long experience in teaching science, coaching/mentoring/training other teachers, and preparing students for science competitions.

Another new senior teacher is Miss Ruby who will not only teach a few English classes but also help enrich our English Program and prepare the English curriculum for the high school. Miss Ruby is an honor graduate of UP Diliman Family Life and Child Development (FLCD) program; she ranked 5th in the Licensure Exams for Teachers in August 2007 and prepares high school students for their college entrance exams.

We shall require all Grade School parents to attend an orientation on the ramifications of the new Singapore Maths and Science curricula as well as our English program this school year. We shall announce the date later. The New Parents' Orientation (for both PS and GS) will be on June 5, 2010, 8-11:30 a.m.
