The Grades 4-7 went to three museums and an earth science exhibit for their major field trip last March 3, 2011. The field trip destinations were chosen for their connection to their Science and Civics lessons.
First in their itinerary was the museum of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) which had a good collection of different historical and religious relics as well as a wide variety of taxidermy specimens of different animal species from the Philippines and elsewhere. Next stop was the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PhIVolcS) in Diliman where a well-versed professional expertly guided the students through visually rich and interactive exhibits on earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. This was followed by a visit to the National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS) Museum at the University of the Philippines; this time, the students learned, from very knowledgeable resident geologists as well as very interesting museum displays, about different types of rocks and minerals, fossils, as well as harvesting of fossil fuel and geothermal energy. The last stop was at the Philippine Science Centrum at the Riverbanks Mall in Marikina where the students had fun exploring different science concepts while interacting with the various exhibits and the Science Centrum guides.
With four different destinations, and tasks to accomplish at each destination, the field trip brought to life Science and Civics topics and concepts which would otherwise not have been as interesting or meaningful were they simply discussed in the classroom. Surely, the attractive exhibits, the knowledgeable guides, and even the fun ride in the mini-bus, created memorable and lasting impressions and lessons for everyone.
